In 2006 the author of Edgewise embarked on a journey to track down the characters in Cookie’s life. The unorthodox route this research took brought the author to the backyards of Provincetown, the truck stops of Baltimore and the late-night liquor stores of the East Village in New York City.
Over the course of 8 years, trust and friendship developed with Sharon Niesp, Cookie’s lover and best friend, and Max Mueller, Cookie’s son, as well as numerous other friends of Cookie's. Through these genuine connections, a closer knowledge of Cookie’s life was made possible.
